API GH & KH Test Kit
Tests for GH (general hardness) and KH (carbonate hardness).
These parameters are often overlooked but are essential for a healthy aquarium.
KH or carbonate hardness can have a direct impact on PH so it is important to keep an eye on this parameter.
KH will naturally drop over time and are usually replaced during water changes.
If your water change schedule is not sufficient then KH can drop which eventually will cause PH to drop. This can be very harmful to your fish.
A lesser known fact is that beneficial bacteria actually consume KH so if the levels fall too low then this can be harmful for the nitrifying bacteria in your system.
GH or general hardness is less important but still worth keeping an eye on.
Some species of fish require harder water such as Mollies and Guppies. Other fish such as Discus and lots of Tetras prefer softer water.
Whilst we don't recommend altering your water to aim for the "perfect" conditions for your particular fish, we do feel that keeping consistent parameters is fairly important.
Just like KH, GH will drop over time and regular water changes are needed to keep these levels consistent.
We would recommend testing once per month.
